Tu Decides THE NEW STEELO, Jamie Fox Concert Review, October 16, 2009

Because of our musical roots and heavy influence of R&B, we thought it would be appropriate to bring a review of live R&B, namely the undeniable Jamie Foxx. Foxx came to the Key Arena in Seattle this past week and we were lucky enough to sit through the show.

Unlike his first visit to Seattle, Foxx concentrated mainly on music and not so much on comedy. Not that this was a bad thing, and don't get us wrong, he still made the crowd laugh on numerous occasions but this show featured almost every song from his newest album, "Intuition," with little comedic performance.

The singer-comedian blew ballads and rocked the arena with his reigning summer hit "Blame It," he also focused on the woman, shouting out to all the "independent women" at every turn. One interesting stance that Foxx did take throughout the show was that the world no longer needed auto-tune (a computerized tool that singers use to tune their voices and make them sound more digital). Maybe he picked up the coattails of Jay-Z, who rapped the song "D.O.A." or "Death of Auto-Tune," which sparked the movement away from the digitized form of song making. Foxx summed up his point by stating that "the women just need to be sang to" – and he’s right.

The superstar's stage show was high-level, using a full band, two dancers, and even large African drums at one point. All in all, the renaissance man brought steelo, comedy, and sultry vocals to Seattle. We can't wait until he comes back.

Remember; let your steelo be your passion. It's a lifestyle.

Tu Decides THE NEW STEELO, Steelo Covers Jay Z Concert, October 21, 2009

On Saturday October 17th one of Music's brightest stars paid a visit to Seattle, WA. Shawn Carter known to the world as Jay-Z, performed to a sold out crowd at Key Arena as part of his Fall Tour. The night was unlike any other as so much anticipation had consumed fans months before. It had been ten years since Jay-Z last performed here, so there was no question that this night was going to be special. From the minute he rose from the depths in center stage, the roars from the crowd made it apparent that this would be one of the greatest nights in Hip-Hop history for the Emerald City. Backed by a full band that Jay-Z calls "The Roc Boys," the Brooklyn native took the audience on a musical journey performing hits from his recent album "Blue Print 3" and past favorites.

There was a unique energy that filled the arena as fans recited every word to every song while standing on their feet throughout his entire performance. Very few artists today can command an audience in this manner with such poise and confidence as Jay-Z does.

Throughout the show he would speak to the crowd in a way that each person felt he was having a conversation with them. At one point he said "I'm here with you tonight in Seattle because I never let anyone block my dreams, I couldn't get a record deal, but I didn't let that stop me." Whether you know Jay-Z the artist and/or businessman, you can be sure that his passion for everything he does is authentic and genuine. He's a true example of someone that makes it a point to have his steelo be his passion.

In true high class fashion Jay-Z closed the show thanking each individual for their purchase and letting the audience know he appreciated their support as he and the band appropriately closed with "Young Forever" from his latest release. The arena, illuminated by the light from lighters and cell phones, looked like a place in outer space, for at least this night Jay-Z had taken the 17,000+ to a place they hadn't been before and would never want to leave, musically.

Tu Decides THE NEW STEELO, Shopping Guide by Steelo, November 6, 2009

With the booming shift of shoppers going online to buy music, CDs and every other kind of thing in the world, we thought it might be helpful to let you know about some great places to shop without having to leave your house- especially because its getting colder! If you like urban sheik and hip hop friendly (our personal favorite), you need to check out drjays.com or karmaloop.com. Both of these sites have a lot of the same brands, but both are a virtual one-stop-shop to take care of all your clothing needs.

One up and coming clothing brand that possesses a steelo all their own is Emperial Nation Clothing. At emperialnation.com, you can purchase shirts not only with style, but stories and history as well. From tops, to bottoms, to hats and more, these spots have everything out there. However, if you're an upscale shopper in the Seattle area, check out the brand new Neiman Marcus shopping boutique located at 11111 NE 8th St in Bellevue, equipped with everything from Fendi to Gucci. They're so upscale that each floor of their parking garage is named after jewels, such as Sapphire. You can't get more high end than that, right?!

So before the holiday season kicks in and you're busy shopping for others, get your Steelo right!

Tu Decides THE NEW STEELO, Seattle International Latino Film Festival, October 9, 2009

The first Seattle International Latino Film Festival took place September 24th - 27th in various venues around the city and was organized by Cine Seattle. As the first of its kind in the emerald city, the festival’s mission was to "exhibit films that recognize the richness and diversity of Spanish speaking communities worldwide." There was an array of films inspired by everything from social injustice to the beauty of artistic expression.

We checked out the documentary "Students of Change: Los del '68," which tells the story of a group of Mexican American youth from the Yakima Valley who had the opportunity to attend the University of Washington in 1968. Today, enrolling into higher education might not seem so uncommon but back in the late 1960’s it was extremely difficult for minority students, such as Latinos, to even be considered for entry into state schools. The students followed in "Los del '68" helped to influence and create policies that the University of Washington uses today to ensure the recruitment of minority students and equal opportunities to all. We often don't realize the sacrifices that older generations have made so that we can reap the benefits today. This film was a great reminder and is not only an inspiration for Latinos, but to all who dream of a higher education.

If you missed the festival, you can check out “"Students of Change: Los del '68,” at www.kcts9.org/change. We hope to see the festival back next year. Mostly a volunteer organization, Cine Seattle definitely let’s Steelo be their passion. Check them out at www.cineseattle.org and see how you can be involved.
